Why check early
Heart Problems Often Develop Without Warning
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States, and it often develops quietly for years. A standard resting ECG can look normal while early problems go unnoticed. Waiting for chest pain or shortness of breath means waiting too long.
What the scan is
The MCG® Heart Scan
The MCG (multifunction cardiogram) is an FDA-cleared heart test built on a resting ECG. Sensors record your heart's electrical signals for about six minutes while you lie still. The recording is analyzed by software that compares your patterns with a large database of validated cases, and the result is a scored report.
According to the manufacturer, the MCG looks for:
- Silent ischemia (reduced blood flow without symptoms)
- Small-vessel and microvascular problems
- Metabolic and autonomic stress on the heart
- Dysregulation that comes before structural damage
How it compares
Different Tests Answer Different Questions
The MCG is not a substitute for other heart tests. It adds a resting, radiation-free look at heart function.
| Test | What it looks at | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Standard resting ECG | Heart rhythm and signs of existing damage | A few minutes at rest |
| Stress test | How the heart responds under effort | Treadmill or medication; some versions use radiation |
| Echocardiogram | Heart structure and pumping | Ultrasound |
| Calcium score | Calcified plaque in the coronary arteries | CT scan, which uses radiation |
| MCG Heart Scan | Functional and electrical changes, including early ischemia | About 10 minutes at rest; no needles, radiation or exercise |
Who it's for
Who Benefits From an Early Look
- Women after menopause, when heart risk climbs as estrogen falls
- Anyone with high blood pressure, prediabetes, diabetes or insulin resistance
- People with a family history of heart disease
- Active adults who want more than a routine physical
- Anyone who wants a baseline to track over time
Why it fits Dr. McCully's approach
The metabolic problems Dr. McCully treats every day, from blood sugar and insulin to inflammation and thyroid function, set up the slow chain of changes that leads to heart disease. The MCG extends her root-cause work to the heart, so a plan can start before symptoms do.

Questions About the Heart Scan
Do I need to be a current patient?
No. The MCG Heart Scan is open to adults whether or not they are Wellness Architecture patients, and referrals from other providers are welcome.
Does the scan involve radiation or exercise?
No. The scan records your heart's electrical signals while you rest. There are no needles, no radiation and no treadmill.
How long does it take, and when do I get results?
The scan itself takes about 10 minutes. Your written report arrives within a few days, and your results review with Dr. McCully is scheduled a few days to a week after the scan.
Can I use HSA or FSA funds?
Yes. The MCG Heart Scan is HSA and FSA eligible.
Does the scan replace my cardiologist or a calcium score?
No. The MCG measures how your heart functions electrically, while a calcium score uses a CT scan to measure calcified plaque. They answer different questions, and the MCG complements care from your cardiologist rather than replacing it.
What if I have chest pain now?
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. The MCG Heart Scan is a screening test, not emergency care.
