Today, I’m here to discuss something essential that many overlook—purpose and meaning. This is the ninth, and perhaps most important, reason for non-physical fatigue. But before I dive into it, let’s recap the first eight reasons we’ve covered:
- Decision Fatigue
- Never-Stop Fatigue
- Hyper-vigilance Fatigue
- Unresolved Feelings of Shame
- Super-Pleaser Fatigue
- Inauthentic Fatigue
- Toxic Relationship Fatigue
- Emotional Management Fatigue
And now, number nine—Purpose and Meaning Fatigue. This is the fatigue that arises when we lack a clear purpose or meaning in life. Let’s dive into why purpose is crucial and how to reconnect with it.
Why Purpose Matters
Purpose is more than just a career path or a family role—it’s about contributing to something bigger than ourselves. When we’re disconnected from purpose, life feels empty, and our energy drains. In fact, I often see people experiencing this fatigue during significant life transitions, such as when kids leave home or when they’re navigating midlife.
How to Discover Your Purpose
I had my own “purpose moment” in my twenties. On a plane to Lebanon, I met a German teacher who asked me if I knew my purpose. After hours of conversation, I realized my purpose was about lifting others up—whether it’s through naturopathy, health guidance, or simply helping people feel confident and hopeful about their journey. This clarity shifted everything for me, and I want to help you find yours too.
Here’s how you can start:
1. Reflect on Your Joys and Passions
- Consider the moments that bring you true satisfaction. Purpose often aligns with activities that energize us, even if it’s a hobby like music or sports. Think of ways to share that joy with others—it could be teaching, creating, or supporting.
2. Think Beyond Yourself
- Real purpose impacts others. Maybe it’s raising confident, independent children, or perhaps it’s creating art that uplifts. Purpose doesn’t need to be grand—it simply needs to feel meaningful.
3. Allow for Growth
- Your purpose might shift over time, and that’s okay. If you’re in a job you dislike, seek aspects of it that serve others. Or, consider transitioning to a role that aligns with your values.
Purpose and Health: How Disconnection Leads to Fatigue
Without purpose, we feel tired, drained, and unmotivated. I’ve seen countless people who fall into physical illness simply because their life feels meaningless. Your immune system, mental health, and overall vitality rely on a sense of purpose. In my practice, I’ve witnessed people rejuvenate simply by reconnecting to a meaningful path.
Find Support in Your Journey
If you’re uncertain about your purpose, I recommend sitting down with a trusted friend, journaling, or exploring books on purpose. Purpose doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s about finding a way to contribute meaningfully to the world around you.
These nine reasons for non-physical fatigue are foundational to reclaiming your energy. If you’ve already addressed physical needs like B12, iron, or vitamin D, consider if one of these root causes is still lingering.
